The Masorini heritage site close to the Phalaborwa gate was once inhabited by a group of the Ba Phalaborwa people who made a living by manufacturing and selling iron artefacts during the Iron Age. In Phalaborwa there were old shafts and stopes from which ore had been extracted in very early days. In local legend it was from these shafts in Phalaborwa that iron had come from that was beaten into assegai heads and primitive hoes. These implements had once been a form of currency among the Ba Phalaborwa tribes - so many iron hoes in exchange for a cow, labola, etc. The agreement among geologists is that Phalaborwa was some 2 000 million years ago an area of intense volcanic activity. Research into the dialect of the Ba Phalaborwa tribes turned up a translation of the word Phalaborwa which means better than the South.
