Lang’s Knifemaking Portal
SO…THE KNIFEMAKING BUG HAS BITTEN YOU TOO?? WELCOME!
My name is
Langdon Wilson, and having wanted to make knives for as long as I can remember,
I eventually got bitten by the bug and started my first knives. In the process I have learnt that there is a
wealth of information out there, but it can be difficult to find the
information specific to your needs. Its helpful to
learn the basics so that you know what information is actually of value to you.
Every new knifemaker that I have met aspires to different challenges:
Some want to
empty their pockets and get all the best tools and expect their first knife to
be perfect, but this is no substitute for patience and research before
approaching the task.
Others want to
start off simple and without a huge capital outlay, and make their first knives
as well as they can with the tools they have, or the purchase of just a few
basic tools.
This site is
intended for those Knifemakers. I have tried to keep the information and
links on this site as basic as possible, and
uncluttered by the technicalities and complexities of metal chemistry and
mechanics.
In this site I
have included a tutorial for making a bevel grinding jig, which I found very
useful for grinding my first knife bevels pretty accurately. Also included is a tutorial of my first
knife. The reason I did this was because
as a beginner, all the ‘dumb’ questions were still fresh in my mind, so
hopefully it will clarify uncertainties which the experienced knifemaker takes for granted. The other two sections touch on useful knifemaking links, and basic knifemaking
information such as knife and blade nomenclature, grind types, blade shapes and
knife styles.
I strongly
advise joining a knifemaking forum (See links) and
getting to know the guys. You will make
friends with people with similar interests and they have a wealth of
information and will always go the extra mile to help out new knifemakers (They understand the knifemaking
bug and have been inflicted for years!)
I wish you all
the best success in your new hobby and may it bring you years of enjoyment!
